John leaned back slightly in his chair. At least they had a bit of direction now. He didnât want Mrs. Powell to have to bear the burden of all this. It was overwhelming enough to him.
Mrs. Powell smoothed her skirt. âI know we probably still have a lot to discuss, but I find Iâm quite weary. I think Iâll go check on Papa and then probably just go to bed.â She hugged Havyn, and then Madysen. âPlease tell Whitney Iâve gone back to your granddadâs room.â
Theyâd set up a cot for her in her fatherâs room, so hopefully sheâd get some much-needed rest.
The room was silent for several moments after she left. Madysen straightened up the cushions and Havyn walked toward him.
âThank you, John. For all youâre doing for our family.â She laid a hand on his arm. âWe can never repay you for your kindness.â
âYouâre quite welcome.â He laid his hand on top of hers, and as their eyes met, he wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of the night right there. With her.
Her cheeks tinged pink and she pulled away. âIâm going to make sure Mama has everything she needs. She looked exhausted. Good night, John.â
âGood night.â When sheâd left, he slapped his hand on his thigh.
âYou like her, donât you?â Madysenâs voice broke through his thoughts.
âI . . .â
The youngest of the Powell women gave a light laugh. âItâs all right. Iâm not teasing you. I think itâs great.â She took a few steps closer to him. âAnd I wonât say a word. I promise.â
If Madysen had noticed, had everyone else? His feelings for Havyn were all a bit too new for him to even put into words. What could he say?
Madysen paused in the doorway and looked back at him. âBy the way, thank you for sacrificing your salary for our family.â
Sheâd no sooner left than Whitney stomped into the room. âSacrificing your salary? So you can look like the hero?â She sneered. Her chin lifted, a fierce look in her eyes. âI need to talk to you. Right now.â She turned on her heel.
What on earth? He reached out to put a hand on her arm. âWhatâs wrong?â
She yanked her arm out of his grasp. âNot in here. As much as I want my family to know, now is not the time.â
âAll right.â John followed her outside and around the corner of the house. What had he done now?
She held up a paper and his heart sank. The contract.
âWhat is this?â
Shaking his head, he swiped a hand down his face. Heâd forgotten about it when Whitney went to his room. âThat is something we should talk to your grandfather about.â
âNo. Iâm not waiting for that. I want to hear it from you. Is that why youâre here? You want the farm, is that it?â She grimaced. âAll this time . . . and to think, I was beginning to warm up to you. Thought you were here to help. I even was ridiculous
